Getting to Angeles Crest can be tricky.
This has certainly been a challenging winter and spring for the camp. As you may be aware, Angeles Crest has been closed to all groups since mid-February due to problems from the winter storms. We wanted to give you an update on the current camp situation and how it affects your upcoming summer camp experience.
ROAD DETOUR
Due to the heavy winter snow and rains, there are two places on the Angeles Crest Highway that have created a
detour to camp. The first place is a mudslide that is half way up the mountain. Because of this mudslide, Cal
Trans has closed the main highway half way up the mountain. The second place is up higher on the highway where part of the road has washed out. With this situation, Cal Trans has created a detour to allow vehicles to go by the washout and have access to Angeles Crest Christian Camp.
The first mudslide is expected to take a year to repair before that part of the highway is open again. The
second place with the road washout is expected to be repaired by the end of the summer.
VIDEO AND MAP OF ROUTE TO CAMP
In order to take the detour to get to Angeles Crest Christian Camp this summer, each vehicle attending the camp must be escorted up the mountain by a staff vehicle from the camp. To give you an idea of what the route and the detour looks like, we’ve attached a map showing where the closures are along with a video showing you what the trip looks like to get to the camp. SPECIAL NOTE: DO NOT FOLLOW ANY GPS COORDINATES AND ALSO, DO NOT STOP AT THE MONTE CRISTO FIRE STATION AND ASK FOR DIRECTIONS, PLEASE FOLLOW DIRECTIONS ON MAP.
ONE LANE TO PASS THE WASHOUT
To get to the camp, each vehicle will need to go through a short stretch of highway next to the washout where only one lane is open. Currently, there are all types of vehicles that have travelled safely through that stretch including cars, trucks, large propane trucks, water trucks, Cal Trans dump trucks as well as tractors, loaders, etc.
CARS AND BUSES TO CAMP
To help get your group up to camp WE NEED YOU TO CARPOOL AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. WE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ESCORT MORE THAN A FEW VEHICLES PER CHURCH OR GROUP. We are encouraging groups to bring vans or larger vehicles that can hold multiple people per vehicle.
If you’ve contracted with a transportation company to bring your group to camp on a bus, we would like you to send us the transportation company information and let us contact them regarding the road conditions and detour to camp.
DUE TO ROAD CLOSURES BY CAL TRANS, PLEASE TAKE THE ALTERNATE ROUTE SHOWN ON THE MAP ABOVE TO GET TO ANGELES CREST CHRISTIAN CAMP (see green line).
SPECIAL NOTE: DO NOT FOLLOW ANY GPS COORDINATES TO ANGELES CREST CHRISTIAN CAMP
